The stone

Alexandrite changes colour because chromium sits in a crystal structure that transmits both green and red light; the eye resolves whichever the light source favours. Under daylight this stone reads bluish green. Under candlelight or tungsten it turns purplish red.

Ceylon alexandrite is typically larger and more transparent than Russian material, and a complete change at this saturation is rare in any origin.
