The stone

Chatoyancy comes from parallel needle inclusions of rutile that reflect a single band of light across the dome. In the finest cat's eyes that band is razor sharp, centred, and mobile.

This 5.75 carat cabochon shows the classic 'milk and honey' effect: under a single light source one half of the stone reads golden and the other milky, with the eye running cleanly between them.

Ceylon has produced the world's reference cat's eye chrysoberyl since the nineteenth century, and Ratnapura remains its source.
