Cobalt-bearing spinel — one of the rarest coloured stones on earth, and never treated.
$34,000
Spinel was mistaken for ruby and sapphire for most of recorded history; several famous crown 'rubies' are spinels. Today it is collected on its own terms, and cobalt blue is its most valuable expression.
Cobalt replaces a trace of magnesium in the crystal lattice and produces an electric, almost neon blue that no other gemstone matches. Fine cobalt spinel is found in commercial quantity only in Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
Spinel is never heated or treated. What you see in this 1.42 carat round brilliant is entirely natural.
